Mom, 24 x 26, oil on canvas

Mom was inspired by an argument with my mother, but developed into a statement about motherhood and its difficulties. Here, a large loaf of bread is stabbed, red and blue cloths run out around a receptacle, eggs are broken, bottles stand ready and various mysterious, menacing devices float around as an implied birth is played out in simple objects. The spiked coconut on the left is a surreal object I’d make that just seemed relevant. The result is a balanced and silent testimony to the emergence from one’s own body of a life form that may actually turn and make life not so wonderful.

Allegory Of Spring
, 9 x 12, oil on canvas

Allegory Of Spring was an extension of earlier, similar still-life studies, this time done specifically to address compositional and symbolic concerns. Typical of all most of my early work on this site, this painting took conventional, traditional approaches to painting and tried to bring them up to date with symbols and modern ideas about design. This painting simply was more modest and understated than some of my others.
