The Earth Series paintings grew out of a desire to do an extended series of open-ended, more ambiguous abstractions. The unusual dimensions served as a natural foil for my gestural brushwork while bringing attentionto its emotional quality. The pieces come off as trademark fragments of my larger works, and have a more playful, lighthearted quality. The title simply reflects the strong, horizontal format.
