I Exist is a small painting I did at a time when I felt unsure of my ability to keep painting.  It is a simple hierarchical arrangement of the primary colors, red, yellow and blue with their complements the secondaries, green, purple and orange, yet it is still expressive.  The title comes from the turning point in my short novel, The Third Testament, in which the protagonist uses the phrase to counter a long philosophical debate with the antagonist.  As I write this, I am reminded of a play on Descartes’ famous saying I changed and like to bandy around, “I am. Therefore I think.”  Gary Jacobs
