Flag and Yellow Leaf - 24 x 16 - oil on canvas

Flag and Yellow Leaf was done late in the series of Flag paintings, which started as studies for a never completed, fourth, wheel and vessel painting. As studies, the idea retained a sense of whimsy and spontaneity welcome at the time, while the intensity and focus I brought to them gave them an ironic gravity and seriousness. Here, the yellow leaf lends the piece a certain poignancy yet tenderness as I usually used green leaves, but opened up to the idea of greater, expressive possibilities.

Flag Paintings #s 1-3, Oil on Canvas, 9 x 12, 12 x 16, 12 x 16

Flag Paintings #s 1-3 were the first notable studies for a proposed Car Tire painting intended to feature a flag background and a branch of maple leaves as compositional elements. The painting was never executed in more than drawing form, but the studies continued as a way of exploring formal issues with potent symbols, psychologically and art historically.
