Gray Painting #2, 18" x 24" - oil on canvas Grey Painting #2 was the second in the series of abstract paintings done to explore the interaction of neutral gray with more expressionist colors. As such, it raises many of the issues discussed concerning Gray Painting #1. Here, however, the composition is more dynamic, the interaction of colors more complex, and the tonality more exotic. I felt there was an almost occult feeling to this piece that was very unusual for me. The Realist mindset invoked by the grays, discussed elsewhere, encouraged the rather conventional size and shape of these paintings. This series was projected to consist of three paintings, but at the same time, neutral colors were already becoming a regular part of all my paintings. |
