Jesus and Mary - 48 x 60 - oil on canvas
Jesus and Mary is intended to be an iconographic representation of their relation, or lack thereof, to the world today. Namely, Jesus is asleep on his back, and Mary is looking down and back. Though they float in Heaven she supports herself with her hand over his heart. The vaguely sexual attitude of the two is intended to convey the highly complex and close way we think of them. As a basis for my short novel, The Third Testament, the premise here is that more promise is held for us by a Goddess based religion than a God based one, though I don’t think that is sustainable long term in a Western society. |
