Jesus Falling - 60 x 48 - oil on canvas Jesus Falling is a contemporary piece in that it depicts a spreading darkness through which we only perceive our former gods as powerless and ineffectual. The gesture of the man on the ground is simply one of "behold." The piece is also a metaphor for myself as an artist as a more recent, realistic me observes the demise of my previous, more rigid, abstracted self. The idea of seeing a body fall from the heavens, yet with no sense of danger or speed, comes from memories of watching comet Hale-Bopp years ago, and is meant to invoke the vastness and timelessness of the cosmos. |
