Gary Jacobs Smoke

Smoke - 14 x 17 - oil on canvas

Smoke is the first in the series of geometric shape paintings I did delving deeper into the theories I took with me from graduate school. As such, it is really a view from the outside in on real-world, provocative objects in an idealized, abstract context. The idea here was to question how we attach meaning to items and understand our world. The tightly controlled scenes also allowed me to explore new techniques in painting, drawing and relating the two. The specific combinations of objects and shapes were totally intuitive, so in this sense I was constantly looking for new emotions and feelings to play into a range of compositions and associations.
